First Impressions

You just never know…

Before Mary and I got married, we made two plane trips.

The first was to Vancouver for my Aunt Joey and Uncle Ed’s 25th anniversary. I’d never been to Vancouver before, and was not really prepared to meet a hundred-odd aunts, uncles, and cousins. I was especially not prepared for the city.

To me, The City (aka Manhattan) was what a city looked like. It was big, noisy, kind of dirty, and packed with people and stuff. When we got off the plane and looked around, I saw a clean well-ordered city surrounded by majestic mountains and trees. We both looked at each other and said, “I could definitely live here.”

Had a great time meeting all my relatives, and meeting my 81 year old grandma. This was the last time I’d see her.

A year or so later, Mary and I accompanied my mom to Florida to visit my great Aunt Nelly (for whom Natalie was named.) In the course of the visit we took a bus trip to Orlando and got to do the Disney thing for a couple of days. Once again we looked around at the very different landscape, and we agreed, “I couldn’t live here.” Everything had a train set look to it – the hill put there, the trees put there, the rocks, the lake… it definitely had an artificial air to it.

So, of course, where did we end up moving to? Orlando.

Editor’s note: Thanks to Joe for reminding me of the occasion of the Vancouver party. I have corrected the post accordingly.
